INTERNATIONAL ICON FOR WIRELESS INTERNET HOT SPOT

Last month, WIRED sponsored a contest to design an international icon for wireless internet access and received hundreds of submissions. The winning design was selected by a prestigious panel of judges who included: Barbara Bloemink, Curatorial Director, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Colleen Macklin, Design Dept Chair, Parsons The New School for Design and Dana Spiegel from NYC Wireless.

The winning design was submitted by Val Frixione from Los Angeles, CA and will make its debut on Friday, Sept 22 at One Web Day in NYC.

Val says, “A wireless hot spot is like a digital oasis that enables us to connect to the world. This is the main concept behind the proposed design: the depiction of planet earth offering a wireless connection to those who need one.”

WIRED is working with NYC Wireless and other organizations to distribute the icon and have it gain global acceptance! And now you can do your part in connecting the world with internet wireless access by using this international icon.

Here's the icon for you to download and use to mark your favorite wireless hot spot.
