San Francisco city has equipped with a sensor network able to identify a free car park and to inform motorists in real time. Motorists can also pay the bill from their mobile.
Thus, to allow motorists to find easier a place to park themselves, the city is working on an initiative which allows to alert drivers, on their mobile, the presence of a free car park nearby.
In concrete term, the system consist in a wireless sensor network, each sensor is stuck on asphalt on each car park. It works thanks to a battery which the life is estimated between 5 and 10 years.
Touching the payment, drivers will allow to pay their car park renting from their mobile.
For the moment, only 6,000 of the 24,000 square meter reserved for car parking will be provided by that network. All street and underground car park should be supply in 2010.
