At the time, this report came as something of a surprise, considering the fact that Qualcomm had long enjoyed hegemony over the Windows Phone market. Today, however, it becomes official, as Nokia has now selected ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor platform as its Windows Phone supplier. There is no sign, however, that this deal…

Even though we’ve seen a torrent of Windows Phone 7 devices, we couldn’t leave you hanging on a review of the Samsung Focus. In the last few days, a flurry of new Microsoft-powered devices have hit the market, boasting slight differences, but all looking and acting largely the same. We’ve taken a deep dive on the operating system itself, the Omnia 7, Optimus 7, Mozart, HD7, and Surround (phew!) — now it’s time to focus on the, er… Focus. The device itself has a lot in common with its European brother, the Omnia 7, boasting the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 8GB of internal storage, 1GHz CPU, and 5 megapixel camera. The device will soon go on sale in America for $199.99 on AT&T’s network — in fact, it’s the only Windows Phone 7 device you’ll be able to buy on the network when they go public on November 8th. But is it really worth your hard earned cash when there are so many other options in the market? Read on for the full Engadget review to find out!

A top Nokia exec just confirmed the much-rumored schedule for the next Windows Phone update, codenamed Apollo. Michael Halbherr, Executive VP for Location and Commerce, told us that it’ll launch in mid-2012 and be a “very different game” to Mango — hinting that Apollo actually refers to Windows Phone 8 rather than any mere decimal increment. What do we know about Apollo at this point? Well, not a great deal, but Halbherr also revealed that he’s been pushing Microsoft to integrate NFC and a “positioning framework” to make its mobile OS work better with Nokia’s Navteq mapping platform and thereby provide new location-based services. Sorry HTC, Samsung, but everything points to a more ‘Nokia-fied’ OS.

The folks in Redmond are making a significant jump forward in the mobile arena, announcing that the upcoming version of Windows Phone, codenamed “Mango,” will be heading to a device near you in time for the holidays. As its competitors have raised the bar of expectations to a much higher level, Microsoft followed suit by adding at least 500 features to its mobile investment, which the company hopes will plug all of the gaping holes the first two versions left open.

We received a Samsung Focus preloaded with the most recent developer build (read: not even close to the market release version) and we had a few good days to put it through its paces. It’s still far from completion, as there were several key features that we couldn’t test out; some weren’t fully implemented, and others involved third-party apps that won’t be updated until closer to launch. Yet we don’t want to call this build half-baked — in fact, it was surprisingly smooth for software that still has at least four months to go before it’s available for public consumption. Read more…

A while back I wrote about a display technology called AMOLED, which, while in fairly wide use today, had properties that could theoretically allow the production of flexible displays.

Well, now two companies, Samsung and Nokia, have are making the prediction come true.

AMOLED – standing for (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) display technology – is in wide use in the mobile phone industry already. The displays themselves are paper-thin and can be “printed” onto a surface using ink-jet technology.

While these properties have allowed companies to produce devices with curved screens, keeping the display functional while it is being bent or twisted is another matter.

Now it seems that researchers have overcome that limitation.

According to published reports, Samsung plans to have a device that features a flexible screen ready by 2012, most likely a mobile phone or other handheld device.

Both companies have produced impressive prototypes.

As one might expect, limitations still are evident in the prototypes; it’s difficult to make “bendable” electronics, and anyone who has taken a modern smartphone apart knows that components are jammed into the case more tightly than sardines in a can. Samsung and Nokia seem to have gotten around this by housing the circuitry in a solid block and making the display itself flexible.

The iPhone 4S will be available in Hong Kong and 14 additional countries on November 11, Apple announced Tuesday.

Apple’s fifth-gen smartphone will go on sale in Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and South Korea next week.

While the iPhone 4S looks the same as the iPhone 4 from the outside, Apple has completely revamped the phone’s innards to include a dual-core A5 processor, a souped-up 8-megapixel camera, Siri voice controls, and iOS 5.

The iPhone 4S is currently available in 29 countries. Apple added 22 countries to the original seven last week. Next week’s addition will bring the total number of countries that have the iPhone 4S to 42. Apple said the iPhone 4S will launch in 70 countries by the end of the year.

However, Apple has not mentioned when the phone will launch in mainland China, the fastest-growing market for the iPhone.
